The Language & Cognition Laboratory(LC-lab) at IIT Madras explores how humans perceive, process, and produce language through cognitive science, linguistics, and experimental methods like eye-tracking and reaction-time studies. Equipped with the EyeLink Portable Duo, the lab conducts research on various linguistic phenomena in Indian languages and beyond. While the current studies focus on grammatical voice and copula constructions, upcoming studies will examine dyslexia in Indian children to improve educational outcomes. By engaging with India’s linguistic diversity and studying language evolution, the laboratory aims to integrate science, technology, and the humanities, fostering interdisciplinary innovation and advancing both theoretical and applied research for societal well-being. Through these efforts, the laboratory also contributes to the development of human-centred and linguistically informed artificial intelligence systems.
